I feel the need…the need for speed

A few weeks ago, there was some serious racing going on. It may not be NASCAR season yet, but it WAS Pinewood Derby season. As in the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby.

My husband and my kid went all out and made a totally rad light saber car. As in:

There was some serious competition in that middle school cafeteria. No joke. One car was a piano. Another was a hot dog in a bun. Those moms and dads were NOT fooling around. It was quite impressive.

Our car—I mean, my kid’s car—totally had style, but we weren’t expecting that much speed because the design wasn’t super aerodynamic. But it turns out light saber cars are fast. Fast enough to win second place in the den. Boom.

But for me, the most satisfying award of the night came when my kid was presented a second trophy. What was it for?

Most unusual car.

How ironic given that I am his mother. (Obviously that statement is ironic itself. I = unusual, ergo I’ve passed along this gene).

We partied late into the night (9 pm!). My kid set up a special shelf for his trophies the next day. And I’m a proud mama.

Enjoy these times. They go by so fast. My husband built a soap-box derby car for my step-daughter. Time moves on but the memories last a lifetime. Good luck with your release!
